Madhes is in the wait and watch mood

The fallout between ruling parties and the opposition may not necessarily radicalise the streets of madhes, but ignoring the local aspirations surely will. Last month, when the ruling coalition snubbed the protesting opposition to kickstart the statute drafting, things got violent inside the CA with the Maoist and Madhesi lawmakers resorting to vandalism. The opposition coalition also came down heavily against what they termed majoritarian diktat and pledged nationwide protests. But the protests were largely centered around Kathmandu, particularly around the CA neighborhood of New Baneshwor.

Emboldened, the ruling coalition are putting pressure on the opposition to get abord or miss the statute drafting bus altogether. The Maoists and the Madhesis, on the other hand seem resolved to bring the ruling parties on their knees by radicalising the streets. UCPN-M leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal has already declared Kathmandu, Madhes and the ethnic strongholds in the hills as three fronts of future protests. But by their own admission, the Maoists and the Madhesis leaders know, if their campaign is to succeed they will need a big showdown in the Madhes that is home to more than half of the country's population, and to some of the most marginalised communities.
